Samsung Galaxy A71 : Mid-Range Smartphone with Elegant Design, Amazing Camera and Snapdragon 730G

The Samsung Galaxy A71, which comes with very important changes regarding its inferior model , but that also has a higher price. What did we think of this phone? You can continue reading our full review below.

The Samsung Galaxy A71 was presented at the end of 2019, but it is Samsung’s commitment to the mid-range for this 2020. We can tell everything that this phone has transmitted to us, which has left us very satisfied in every way.

the design of the Samsung Galaxy A71 will not surprise anyone. At least not to those familiar with the latest Samsung launches , as it follows the same design line as all of them . For example, aesthetically it is identical to the Samsung Galaxy A51 but with a slightly larger size. Anyway, we do a thorough review of everything related to the design of the Galaxy A71, which is a phone that anyone will like.

At first, it is striking that despite being a phone with a 6.7-inch screen diagonal, it is surprisingly manageable. This is due to the 20: 9 format of its screen, which makes it narrower than other phones with this diagonal, maintaining a width similar to that of phones with smaller screens. Of course, in terms of height, this phone is longer than normal, so in some pockets it may not fit completely . This screen format has its pros and cons, as we will see later.

The screen has a very good use of frames and we like that the curvature of its corners is not as pronounced as we have seen for a few years, giving the feeling of being a “square” phone, but without reaching what we find in The Samsung Galaxy Note 10 , for example. At the top of the screen and centered, we have a hole for the front camera. Its size has caught our attention, as it is larger than what we found in the Galaxy A51 despite being the same camera, as it is surrounded by a small black circle. If they implement the same hole as in the lower version, it would be almost negligible.

The back of this phone, although it may not seem like it at first, is constructed of plastic, but tries to mimic glass in appearance and feel . It feels very good in the hand and not everyone would come to differentiate it, but it is true that for its price, we would like to see a little more premium materials. It has a polygonal finish that is seen in certain lighting conditions and a vertical stripe pattern that is visible and gives it a distinctive touch.

In the upper left corner of the back, we have a rectangular camera module with four sensors inside in an “L” shape. We also have an LED flash. This is the design that we are seeing in all the latest releases from Samsung and many other brands, as it seems to have become a trend. E n some cases is justified by the distribution of sensors and in cases like this, is to resemble high – end phones . This module protrudes about 1 millimeter from the phone’s chassis, but it does not make the phone dance when we put it on its back.

The frames of the phone are also made of plastic and show us a good distribution of buttons and ports: on the right, volume and power / Bixby keys; at the bottom, USB type C, 3.5 mm jack, call microphone and multimedia speaker ; left side, tray for nano SIM and microSD; and on top, a noise-canceling microphone.

With its 6.7 inches diagonal, it is normal that the screen of this Samsung Galaxy A71 is one of the points that most interest consumers. With superAMOLED technology and FullHD + resolution, it has a more panoramic format than usual, reaching 20: 9. This makes it narrower, but also longer, so with the thumb we can easily touch elements on the other side of the screen, but it will be impossible to interact with the upper parts of the screen without using both hands.

Regarding the quality of it, it is one of the things that we liked the most about this phone. The same has already happened with its lower model, but in this case we reiterate ourselves. We love OLED screens and in this case, Samsung has managed to mount a good quality panel in its best mid-range so far . It has a really good contrast and the colors are really vivid, but without going to the unreal side. We have used the intense color profile which increases the saturation a bit and makes it more attractive, but we can also use a natural color profile.

The viewing angles are excellent and we did not notice chromatic variation or rainbow effect as we have seen in previous cases of OLED screens . The resolution is more than enough for a terminal of this size, reaching almost 400 pixels per inch, which makes it impossible to differentiate the pixels of the different elements.

We also liked the level of brightness a lot, because we can enjoy the screen of the Samsung Galaxy A71 even in bright sunlight and we will have no problem to see our social networks or respond to messages on WhatsApp. If we have to look for a defect, it is the minimum brightness, which is not as low as we would like and if we are using the phone in dark environments, it will blind us with the lighter colors. The advantage is that being an OLED screen, if we use applications with black backgrounds, this will not happen, since those areas do not emit any brightness.

Regarding the screen format, for the use of applications of daily use such as messaging apps or social networks, it is very comfortable, since it allows us to see more content without having to scroll. We can even use the multi-window to leave a YouTube video at the top and continue using other apps with a more than enough size at the bottom. Of course, when watching videos in full screen, if they are recorded in 16: 9 either there is a reduced video size or we will lose a lot of information when enlarging it. Of course, for movies or videos in panoramic format, it is a joy.

Audio Quality

With the Samsung Galaxy A51 we noticed that the audio was not up to what we expected in a phone of its price, but in the case of the Samsung Galaxy A71, this aspect is noticeable improved . We have a single speaker at the bottom of the terminal, which has a really high maximum volume, but at maximum levels it begins to distort and lose quality.

At more normal volumes, we notice fairly balanced audio, optimized to improve bass, and not sounding canned . Of course, due to the position of the speaker, it is easy to shut it off when we put the mobile horizontally to play or watch a video and cover practically all the audio output.

Processor and Performance

we have mentioned that the processor has had a good evolution with respect to its predecessor, going on to use a Qualcomm Snapdragon 730. We have been able to test this same processor in different terminals and it was the star component in the mid-range of 2019. At the moment, we find superior versions of this processor, such as the Snapdragon 730G (which has slightly higher frequencies) or the Snapdragon 765 , a processor with 5G incorporated. Considering that we will soon see a Galaxy A71 5G , it makes sense that the processor chosen is finally the Snapdragon 730.

Perhaps for the price to pay, there are alternatives with a better processor on the market, but the high-end ones are reserved for phones of about 700 euros upwards in the Samsung catalog. Anyway, we are very satisfied with the performance that this Snapdragon 730 has offered us in all cases . On the power, it has more than enough for almost any task, that is quite obvious and we can play multiple titles without suffering from slowdowns, yes, in some cases, with the graphics at medium levels.

The only game in which we have noticed some jerks has been in Shadowgun War Games, but it is not something that has happened to us exclusively on this phone, because the game in question seems not to be fully optimized to run on mobile phones that are not high spectrum.

In the day-to-day experience, this Samsung Galaxy A71 deserves applause for the good performance and experience it has offered. Without exaggeration, it is at the level of more expensive Samsung phones, since everything moves with total fluidity, from the launcher itself to the applications, opening them, etc. The jump we noticed in the user experience compared to its younger brother is significant and we are happy with the implementation of a Qualcomm processor, which will also allow anyone to use GCam.

The multitasking behavior has also been ideal and we have not noticed unnecessary closings of applications in the background , everything was just as we had left it. Of course, heavy games after a while did end up closed, but it is normal and we do not see it as a negative aspect in a terminal of this style.

At first, the camera configuration of the Samsung Galaxy A71 paints the least interesting:

  • 64 megapixel f / 1.8 main
  • 12 megapixel f / 2.2 wide angle
  • 5 megapixel f / 2.4 macro
  • 5 megapixel f / 2.2 depth

we can tell you that the only two cameras that we will notice and take advantage of are the first two, since the macro camera is reserved for a very specific occasion , offering a point of view very close to the objective of the photo. and the depth camera, at this point we know that it is nothing different with respect to what can be achieved by software.

Let’s talk about the main camera first. Those 64 megapixels impress many, but the reality is that 99% of the photographs that we take with this terminal will be at 16 megapixels. It is even the default resolution. This is due to the fusion of 4 pixels in 1 that is carried out to simulate larger pixels and improve the quality of the photographs compared to what we would have with the full resolution. Also say that in good light conditions, we will not notice big differences when taking a photo at 64 megapixels or 16 in terms of image quality, but we will have much more detail in the higher resolution shot (the weight is almost 20 MB for each shot).

During the day or in good light, the results are fantastic, it is something that cannot be denied. The colors are vivid, somewhat saturated compared to reality, but it makes the photograph not boring in its final result. We have noticed a tendency to saturate the sky of the photographs in excess , because as you can see, in some of them we have an intense blue color, unlike the real color, which had a lighter tone. Of course, the result is very attractive.

When the light goes down, with the scene optimizer activated, we will see how the photographs are often taken with the night mode automatically. This makes them look very good, better than expected, at least on a mobile screen. We say this because when we see these images on a larger screen, such as a computer, we notice focus failures , lack of detail and a lot of noise, but taking into account that most of the photos we take with the mobile phone do not come out of it, the behavior is well.

On the wide-angle camera, again, in good light, the results are striking and we liked them a lot. It has a better dynamic range than other cameras of this style and although the distortion of the images is noticeable, it is not something that spoils its quality. Of course, at night it is not worth using it unless necessary, because in addition to the lack of sharpness and noise, we notice how the color of some lights changes radically, making everything look much more yellow and saturated than it is. actually.

The battery capacity of this Samsung Galaxy A71 has not grown compared to its predecessor and remains at 4,500 mAh. As a novelty, in the box we find a 25 W power charger , which is appreciated so that the charge does not take too long. With this Galaxy A71, Samsung has managed to offer an autonomy that we can call almost excellent, being able to reach 7 and a half hours of active screen in two days of use.

Some days we have seen how after 5 hours of active screen we still had 50% left, so technically we could even reach 10 hours of use of the phone . In our tests, we have used it intensively and also lightly, depending on the use we would like to give it at all times and it has never left us hanging, reaching the end of the day in plenty, without having to go through the charger.

In case of having to charge it, to reach 100% we will need approximately 1 hour and 20 minutes , but in just 30 minutes of charging we can approach 50%, which is already more than enough to reach the end of the day, even with use more intense. In this sense, we are very satisfied with the Samsung Galaxy A71.
